The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.



The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the goal to transform the idea of transport in Jerusalem. Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be made paved in the various neighborhoods. It will also encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to Sorek's purification plant.
